Christmas starts early in Berlin

Sometime in mid-November, to be not-very-precise. That’s when Christmas markets start popping up around town. Glühwein abounds, bands dressed as the Brothers Claus toot out Christmasy tunes, and people cluster around the warmth emanating from the hot-food stands. It’s a scene best described in pictures, so here goes.

First, the most famous Christmas market in Berlin, at the Gendarmenmarkt:

And its counterpart at Potsdamer Platz, complete with an artificial sledding hill:
